Selling an Alfa Romeo Giulietta
Although the Alfa Romeo 1900 was designed to bring the company to the upper middle class, the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta (Italian for Juliet) would be the company’s real launch as a household name. It was designed as a small four-door Berlina sedan to accompany the Alfa 1900. Although the Giulietta continued company tradition by offering a double-overhead camshaft 1,290cc engine paired with a four-speed manual transmission, unlike the 1900, the engine was all alloy. Giuliettas, like the 1900, would feature unit-body construction and would be equipped with independent front suspension with a live rear axle. While originally planned for release in 1954, production delays would lead to Alfa holding a lottery to appease customers. With this lottery they could win a limited-production Sprint coupe in place of the Berlina sedan. Designed and built by Bertone, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint would be so popular that it would become a permanent part of the Giulietta range along with the Spider and Berlina. Various states of tune were also available including the 50hp Berlina, the 65hp Normale, and the 90hp twin-carbureted Veloce editions. In 1962, the Giulia would join the Giulietta and would ultimately replace it.
