About H.J. Mulliner and Co.

 

Founded in 1897, H.J. Mulliner and Co. was a family business. John Croall & Sons gain controlling interest of H.J. Mulliner and then sold the interest to Rolls-Royce in 1959. Mulliner became the personal commissioning department for Bentley. Bodies were fitted to a number of various chassis under John Croall & Sons, but by the 1930s, the entire output went to Rolls-Royce and Bentley. Mulliner was merged with Park Ward in 1961, to become Mulliner Park Ward under Bentley ownership. H.J. Mulliner and Co. would receive vehicles as chassis cum engine with no coachwork, no interior and often no tires. The coachbuilder would then design the car’s body and interior to match the taste of the client. Each model was very unique as a result, with some made in only one or a few examples. Mulliner was one of the last independent coachbuilders not to be controlled by motor manufacturer or distributors.
