About J Gurney Nutting and Co.

 

Named after John Gurney Nutting, J Gurney Nutting and Co. was an English company founded in 1918. J Gurney Nutting and Co. presented their first designs at the London Motor Show in October 1920. The coach building firm introduced their “all-weather” body in 1921, with a roof that folded in the usual way and side windows lowering into the doors. In 1923, a fire destroyed the company’s premises in Croydon and the business moved to Chelsea on Elystan Street. J Gurney Nutting and Co. purchased a license to employ the Weymann technique in 1924, which made the cars quieter and lighter. A F McNeil joined the firm as chief designer that same year, and he was credited with the creation of some of the most successful models made by J Gurney Nutting and Co. During World War II, all coachbuilder work was suspended and in 1945, the business became part of the Jack Barclay group, which had acquired James Young Limited previously.
