About Kellner

 

George Kellner, a reputable coachbuilder whose roots traced back to Paris, France in the in the 1860s, was a company that initially created to build custom bodies for horse carriages. Only a few decades later, by the late 1890s, Kellner had shifted his focus to building automobiles of the day and by 1903, Kellner had created his first custom model for the automobile industry. This period also marked the death of the founder and the resultant transfer of the business to the sons. This would lead to new areas for the coachbuilders, including some substantial contracts with Bugatti (the T41 Royale), Hispano-Suiza, and Renault. Creating some momentum, Kellner soon thereafter founded a strong relationship with Rolls-Royce building nearly 90 bodies prior to the initiation of World War I. One of the most memorable builds from that time is what is now recognized as the ‘Torpedo’ body style. Unfortunately, the coachbuilder was unable to make it through World War II, which was the main reason for its closure.
