A close ally of the Rolls-Royce entity, Rippon Bros was a family coach building company founded in 1870, in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Forming a relationship that blossomed over time, Rippon Bros and Rolls-Royce held a close relationship for nearly a century, with nearly all of the coachwork performed by the builder up until 1958. Known for the high-quality of their coachwork, the coachbuilder was eventually presented with an award to commemorate the delivery of the 1,000th Rolls-Royce and Bentley. Although 1963 was the year of this award, and 1970 marked the year of sale for Rippon Bros to Appleyard of Leeds, much transpired in the way ownership prior. A man named Joseph Rippon founded the Rippon Bros coach building business, and for two decades following (ending in 1969) Colonel Reginald Rippon actually ran the business and became the company’s managing director. The death Messr. Rippon ultimately led to the sale of the business in 1970.
