Selling a 1968 BMW 1800

1968 BMW 1800

What the 1500 series had introduced seven years earlier, the 1800 series had long since taken over. The 1968 BMW 1800 came about when that series was nearing the end of its production road, but it nevertheless enjoyed solid sales and predictable (by that point) customer satisfaction. Possibly inadvertently, the Bavarian auto manufacturer had found a clever way of fusing style with power while keeping practicality and the family unit front of mind. If any one car embodied this remarkable amalgamation, it was the 1800 series. And with the 1968 BMW 1800 that embodiment was firmly and familiarly alive and well. Never one to sit idly, BMW’s design team had, by 1968, already begun work on a number of replacement models. But the 1800 series had cemented its integral place in BMW history, had proven itself insanely profitable, and had satisfied drivers/consumers throughout Germany and abroad.

The Neue Klasse sedans had established a degree of recognition for themselves by the late-1960s. An exterior design unique unto themselves and a branding effort predicated as much upon performance as on style had catapulted BMW’s New Class into the public consciousness over the years. But bodies and branding will only carry a vehicle manufacturer so far in what is, after all, a highly competitive industry. Fortunately for the 1968 BMW 1800, it was characterized as much by the renowned M10 motor. In its 1.8-liter configuration, the M10 plodded its host chassis along with 90 horsepower, an overall favorable strength/weight ratio given the 1800’s dimensions and weight. From a modern day seller’s perspective, this iteration of the 1800 will feel adequately strong for highway cruising and suitably designed to comport with handling demands. Keep those details in minds when composing your sales pitch.
