Selling a 1971 BMW 1800

1971 BMW 1800

In 1971, a new era was dawning for the engineers, designers, and leadership at Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW). The New Class sedans, which enjoyed a production lifespan beginning in 1962 and ending in 1971, were saying farewell to a series which had brought the German car manufacturer unrivaled success. And so it was that the 1971 BMW 1800 closed out a brilliant chapter for its maker, having seen a total of 134, 814 units produced during its nearly decade-long run; this was an average of nearly 17,000 units per year. That said, the 1971 BMW 1800 saw only 7,654 produced that year—the lowest production volume that model would ever witness. Nevertheless, it was a fairly strong conclusion to a marvelous story of commercial prosperity and engineering genius.

Considering the aggressiveness with which BMW had released successor models to the New Class throughout the late-1960s and in 1970-71, the fact that nearly 8,000 1800s rolled off the assembly lines at all is something of a minor miracle. But consumers, as any marketing expert will attest, like what they like. And despite BMW’s efforts to keep things innovative and novel, the public was reluctant to part ways with what had been a superb Neue Klasse entry. A series of changes which had separated mid-series 1800s from their precursors, such as a new dashboard, were naturally present in the 1971 BMW 1800. But ole faithful herself, the trusty M10 SOHC motor, was still at work under the shapely hood of that final 1800. Even with the automatic transmission option, changes to the front grille, and a modified stroke/bore ratio, the 1800 was still in many respects the same car that had acquainted itself with the driving community in 1963.
