Selling a 1972 BMW 2002 tii
With over 860,000 units produced over a ten-year timespan (1966-1976), the 02 Series was destined to exist in a number of variants throughout its production run. Fist conceived of as a 2.0-liter, 2-door expansion of the New Class’s 1600 sedan, what would ultimately become the 1972 BMW 2002 tii was essentially a step into a sportier direction that BMW labored steadily to realize. Aside from its obvious distinctiveness from the New Class 4-door sedans, the 1972 BMW 2002 tii was also a departure from the 2002 ti with which it bore a superficial resemblance. Engine design had taken a step forward and the 1972 BMW 2002 tii incorporated changes accordingly. Specifically, where the ti had used a standard carburetion system, the tii was fuel-injected and produced a good deal more power, rendering an undeniable racing machine.
A displacement of 1,990 cc yielded for the 2002 tii its generous 130 horses of power (97 kW) and placed it a cut above its immediate predecessors in the BMW family. The engine strength by itself was noteworthy, particularly in relation to earlier New Class sedans, but of significance was the fact that this horsepower upgrade was implanted into a chassis far shorter (nine inches) and a bit lighter than the 4-door New Class sedans. In effect, the drivers found themselves piloting a sports ride both gutsier and more compact than the sedans which predated it. Furthermore, the tii was itself an augmented version of the already well-performing ti, with its additional 11 horsepower stemming from an upgraded and more tightly running engine. Because of their iconic place in BMW lore, 2002s are highly sought after in the classic sports car community. Selling one could be as simple as contacting a savvy and trustworthy dealer who recognized the 2002’s value.
