Selling a 1973 BMW 2002 tii
From a manufacturing and design standpoint, 1973 was a busy year for Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW). Over a decade into their production run, the New Class sedans were doing well commercially, but they were being handily overshadowed by their 02 Series counterparts. This had everything to do with the 02’s sportier, more sophisticated (in terms of engineering) properties, to say nothing for its excellent drivability and handling. BMW was already on its way to establishing a racing and sports car credibility with the New Class when the 02 came along and cemented the image. The 1973 BMW 2002 tii was a case study in its manufacturer’s capacity for dynamic designs and model variability, as it was available for purchase in a Touring version featuring the tii engine, and as the turbocharged Turbo that was made known to the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1973. While the Touring model experienced a fairly short production lifespan, its presence on the automotive scene established a commercial precedent for its manufacturer.
Classified as a Compact Executive Car, the fuel-injected 1973 BMW 2002 tii was designed for style and performance, though not necessarily in that order. Its 2-liter engine was capable of turning out 97kW—130 horsepower—which allowed the tightly machined ride to reach top speeds of 115 miles per hour. As for the “compact” aspect of its design, the 1973 BMW 2002 tii was the better part of a foot shorter than its 4-door New Class counterparts. Combine this condensed frame with a power-maximized motor and you have a credible sports car on your hands. Speaking of which, power-maximization is exactly what the model achieved in its turbocharged incarnation, as the Turbo pumped out a healthy 170 horses from its relatively lean 2-liter engine. Unfortunately for BMW and the 2002, a global oil crisis cut down the Turbo in its prime, with a modest 1,672 units ultimately being manufactured. This, of course, qualifies the impressive ride a rarity by classic car standards, which bodes well for sellers hoping to secure top dollar for their own 2002 tii.
