Selling a 1974 BMW 2002 tii
Even the most intelligently, responsibly, and conservatively run businesses often find external influences impinging upon their operations and planning. This was certainly the case for BMW in the mid-1970s, as the oil crisis crippled demand for high-performance, fuel-intensive sports cars of the very sort the Bavarian automobile manufacturer specialized in designing, producing, and selling. Wise business stewardship during the 1960s insulated BMW from any serious threats to their finances of marketplace presence, but a number of models and model variants did suffer from the crisis. Of those negatively impacted, the 1974 BMW 2002 tii was particularly hard hit, as the Compact Executive Car was a performance-focused machine with a healthy petroleum appetite to match. Interestingly, the 1974 BMW 2002 tii belonged to the 02 Series, which was itself based upon the BMW’s company-saving New Class models. But geopolitical circumstances were less kind to the 1974 BMW 2002 tii than they had been to most of the New Class models.
Unlike the ti variant, the 2002 tii was powered by a fuel-injected engine. This 2-liter fireplug delivered to the wheels a muscular 130 horsepower (97kW). It offered racing-level performance in a compact, graceful chassis/body and had achieved competitive accolades in legitimate racing circuits earlier in the decade. But it was the Turbo model, a pioneer in the turbocharged automobile family, which graduated BMW to a completely new standard for driving excellence. Whereas the tii produced an already remarkable 1300 horses, the Turbo had 170 housed in its confines. The company’s reputation as a quality player in the sports car space was unimpeachable by this point and with this model. Collectors and enthusiasts recognize the tii and its Turbo upgrade for the performance they continue to offer and for their place in BMW history.
