Selling a 1975 BMW E9

1975 BMW E9

The oil embargo of 1973-1974 had come and gone, rendering 1975 a recovery year by default. Of course, after a hit of that magnitude, no industry could be expected to rebound immediately…at least not fully. It was under such unfavorable circumstances that the final E9, the 1975 BMW E9, was manufactured and set loose in a marketplace which was more fuel-conscious than had previously been the case. On top of its being the last of the E9s, the 1975 BMW E9 was also produced in far smaller numbers than what had been produced in the preceding years; fewer than 2,000 units would come into being, a number larger only than the 138 which had been produced in 1968. In short, the E9 was nearing its end, though its final chapter was hardly ignominious. In fact, BMW went to great lengths in responding to the oil crisis which had taken its toll on the gas-guzzling 3.0-liter coupé.

What bears mentioning is that BMW was, for all intents and purposes, ceasing production of the E9 on its own terms. Yes, the oil embargo had taken a toll on automobile sales and certain models (the sportier options) were hard hit by that reality; but the M30 engine whose variants had been the heart of the 1975 BMW E9 and the earlier models, would carry on for years after the E9 was discontinued. BMW had even experimented with a 2.5-liter variation of the E9 which was introduced specifically to answer the problem of rising gas prices. These were not produced in large quantities, but they spoke to BMW’s adaptability and responsiveness to external factors. Above all, the E9 was a muscular reminder of BMW as a legitimate player on the racecar scene and as a manufacturer capable of competing in significantly distinctive markets. The sales process is rendered at least marginally easier when the product on hand is both historically significant and of high-performance design. Without question, the 1975 BMW E9 is both of these.
