Selling a 1979 BMW M1
It was the late-1970s and Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) was nearing the end of its second prosperous decade since recovering from a 1950’s period of decline. Excellent engineering, effective marketing, and generally solid business practices had elevated the Bavarian automobile manufacturer to a status of respect and marketplace viability throughout the 1960s/1970s. While much of this success was owed to the New Class Series and the practical, sporty sedans that fell under that category, BMW was also actively venturing into the racing scene and had expanded its consumer base with popular Compact Executive Cars and spritely coupé models. But the 1979 BMW M1—with its 3.5-liter, straight-6, 273hp, M88—was as much a departure from the previous decade’s sedans as those had been from the previous century’s horse and buggy. It was precision, power, performance, and prestige all packaged in a single homologation special, and it had been born of a defunct partnership.
Commercially speaking, the 1979 BMW M1 had been conceived of as a high-end performance racing car that would be safely configured for street car functionality. Featuring a supremely graceful body and more engine muscle than most drivers knew how to handle, the 273 horses of power housed within the 1979 BMW M1 were animating a vehicular work of art. Even in its street legal form, the M1 reached speeds of 162 miles per hour, which established the ride as a racing thoroughbred by sports car aficionado standards. Though Lamborghini had not taken part in the M1 project, it was in fact designed by the renowned Giorgetto Giugiaro, who left on the car a distinctive Italian aesthetic, which combined rather nicely with the German engineering under that sleek hood. As the M1 was a homologation undertaking aimed at a niche market, it is not a particularly common set of wheels within the BMW family. Rarity often makes for attractive selling terms.
