Selling a 1980 BMW M1
BMW was entering the 1980s in fine shape following a largely prosperous (multiple oil crises aside) two previous decades. The Bavarian automotive manufacturer’s crown jewel, arguably, was the 1980 BMW M1, a racing machine of supreme style and incredible performance. What had begun as a homologation partnership with Lamborghini had ended up belonging solely to BMW, though the Italian Giorgetto Giugiaro’s influence was visibly evident in the 1980 BMW M1’s gracile and edgy appearance. Existing at the intersection of BMW’s engineering excellence, racing legitimacy, and marketplace competitiveness, the 1980 BMW M1 was central to its manufacturer’s endlessly evolving identity. Aside from the commercial niche at which the M1 was aimed, the brilliant machine was also representing BMW on the Formula One tracks and had seen its profile raised further, if briefly, with the short-lived BMW M1 Procar Championship (1979-1980). The famous racer Niki Lauda was champion in the Procar’s first year, Nelson Piquet in its second (and last).
Encased within that aerodynamic, aesthetically pleasing M1 body was a 3.5-liter, fuel-injected, straight-6 that could achieve speeds of over 160 miles per hour. And this was just only the street legal version. Power, performance, and visual appeal of the M1’s sort came together to solidify BMW’s place in the racecar community. The German automotive manufacturer had made itself synonymous with first-rate engineering, competitive marketing, and an impeccable sense of style/design. Of course, a vehicle of this caliber, designed for premiere racing venues as much as for lead-footed consumers, was destined to be produced in modest quantities. In all, 453 M1’s rolled off BMW’s production line, 20 of which had been manufactured expressly for the Procar racing series.
