Selling a 1981 BMW M1

1981 BMW M1

Twenty years had passed since BMW’s Neue Klasse line of sport sedans, introduced in 1961, had rescued the company from financial ruin, and the automobile manufacturer had spent its time and resources very wisely. Having set a high standard of engineering and design excellence throughout the 1960s and 1970s, BMW predictably turned its sights on the premiere racing circuits where it hoped to make a strong impression. A homologation partnership with Lamborghini was born of that ambition, and while the 1981 BMW M1 would not have existed without that initial joining of forces, Lamborghini would ultimately acquit itself of the undertaking. The 1981 BMW M1 embodied all of the quality touchstones for which its manufacturer was increasingly known, but was designed by the great Giorgetto Giugiaro and possessed a number of recognizable Italian cosmetic flourishes. Above all, the 1981 BMW M1 was an enormous technological milestone for the Bavarian carmaker.

While the M1 was a paragon of inspired design and high style, what mattered most was what its engine had to offer. That engine was the DOHC, 3.5-liter M88, a mighty straight-6 capable of producing 273 horses (204 kW) and pulling the car along at 162 miles per hour. While BMW had been consistently improving upon its engine designs year over year, and had released some legitimately powerful sports cars, the M1 was a powerhouse that dwarfed its every predecessor and set a new bar for its manufacturer. In its 850-horsepower turbocharged configuration, the M1 was successful in rendering BMW a serious contender on the racing scene, while its lower-powered consumer variant was more than suitably attractive to draw the interest of commercial buyers. Because of their premium production costs and narrow market appeal, the M1 was produced in a final quantity of 453, and 20 of those were made expressly for the Procar series. But rarity is a friend to the seller, and finding a buyer for your M1 can be as simple as contacting the right dealership.
