Selling a Glas 1300 GT

Glas 1300 GT

Andreas Glas went into business in the long ago year of 1895, and could surely not have fathomed what awaited his company in the latter half of the 20th century, or how its operation might come to benefit the projects of a direct competitor. One glance at the sleek, sharp look of the Glas 1300 GT and it becomes clear that its intersection with BMW was in some ways inevitable. What is less (if at all) clear is the notion of Glas having begun as repair outfit for farming/agricultural equipment. Seventy years after its somewhat humble founding, Glas was influencing the sports car arena in ways which might earlier have seemed inconceivable. Perhaps more so than anything the small, specialty manufacturer ever produced, the Glas 1300 was an iconic testament to the company’s legacy in Germany sports car history.

Armed with a dense 1290 cc engine, the Glas 1300 GT was capable of top speeds topping 100 miles per hour (approximately 106) with its 55 kW output. A subsequent iteration would produce 62.5 kW, pushing the top speed to a wind-cutting 109 miles per hour. Just over 5,000 units of the coupe variant were ultimately produced, and a mere 400 of the cabriolet alternative, making this a rare gem of an automotive creature. A couple of years following the 1300 making itself known to the public, BMW took control of Glas and immediately began incorporating its proprietary engineering/design features into its own models and schematics. No strictly Glas units would be produced from that point forth. With its independent existence having been rendered extinct a half-century past, Glas models are highly venerated and sought after within the vintage vehicle community.
