Selling a BMW M1

BMW M1

When the German BMW and Italian Lamborghini entered into a provisional partnership with one another in the early-1970s, the aim was fairly straightforward, even if the execution was not. What would ultimately become the BMW M1, a mid-engine racer, began as a homologation project. For various reasons, Lamborghini divorced itself from the undertaking and the BMW M1’s completion and manufacturing were left to BMW itself. A testament to the prestige and high-performance bona fides of the M1 is the fact of its having been hand-built from 1978-1981 by BMW’s motorsport division. This was the group that had direct ownership of BMW’s Formula One designs and related racing ventures. In short, the BMW M1 was for the Bavarian manufacturer a full-bore foray onto the mainstream racing/homologation scene.

Though officially designed by the Italian Giorgetto Giugiaro, inspiration was plainly taken from Paul Bracq’s groundbreaking 1972 BMW Turbo. The end result was a fusion of BMW’s signature sense of brilliant performance with instantly recognizable Italian aesthetics. Form and function shared a spotlight with the BMW M1, which was characterized by an aerodynamic, low profile chassis and was a mechanical embodiment of racing’s very essence. Being a mid-engine design, the M1’s 3.5-liter, 6-cylinder, twin-cam engine (the M88) was located between the front and rear axles. Like the 2002 tii, the M1’s engine opted for fuel injection over a carburetor, which allowed for still greater power yield. In its standard form, the M1 yielded an enormous 273 horsepower, and soared along the roadways at a top-speed of 162 miles per hour. Even this was outdone by the track version, which yielded a dizzying 850 horses, approximately triple the standard model. These are figures that easily measure up to modern standards, let alone the M1’s stylistic appeal.
