1948 Jaguar XK120

The 1948 Jaguar XK120 is one of those classic cars that folks just can’t get enough of. Introduced at the October 1948 London Motor Show, the Jaguar XK120 was actually designed to show-off the new engine that Jaguar had manufactured. Not only the first engine released by Jaguar, it was the world’s first mass-produced engine with twin overhead camshafts and hemispherical combustion chambers. Furthermore, the engine allowed the 1948 Jaguar XK to reach more than 120mph, which is where the “120” name came from. When the car was introduced at the motor show, heads turned, industry enthusiasts gasped, and the world took notice. More than just a car to display an engine, its appealing styling and curvaceous body had buyers wanting more. With such excitement, William Lyons, director of Jaguar at the time, was convinced to move the car into mass-production. Interestingly, approximately the first two hundred models were made with an aluminum body while Jaguar was still deciding whether or not to move into mass-production.

1948 Jaguar XK120 Seller’s Guide

As one might imagine, these first models with the aluminum body are some of the most sought-after of this particular line, as they were true originals before the Jaguar XK120 transitioned to pressed steel bodies. Other popular variations included the OTS, or the Open Two-Seater that was designed for the American market, and a Drop Head Coupe version that was released in 1953. A third version, the Fixed-Head Coupe, was released in 1951.
