While approximately 50 handcrafted, aluminum-bodied 356 models were produced between 1948 and 1949, the 1950 Porsche 356 would become the first volume-production Porsche, a car that would place the German automaker on the world stage. A sports car available in both a hardtop and soft-top, the Porsche 356 was a lightweight, rear-engine, two-door sports car that turned heads. Its style and grace, paired with power and ingenuity, would propel it to become one of the most sought after sports cars of all time. Throughout its production, more than 76,000 would roll off the production floor in Germany – of which it is estimated that half remain today. Created by Ferry Porsche, the son of Porsche founder Ferdinand Porsche, much of the mechanics of the Porsche 356 were derived from the Volkswagen, including the engine, chassis and suspension. After its debut in 1948, Ferry quickly re-engineered and refined the car with a strong focus on engineering and performance.

1950 Porsche 356 Seller’s Guide

As with any classic car, buyers that are searching for a 1950 Porsche 356 will have many questions that you as the seller should be prepared to answer. The first thing on most 356 buyer’s minds will be authenticity, as there are numerous companies that produce replica or “kit” cars in the 356 style. To prove authenticity, you may want to provide photographs of matching chassis and engine numbers as well as proof of authenticity from Porsche. Chassis numbers are stamped in the trunk area in front of the tank and the engine number is on the base of the generator, as well as the crank casing behind the fan. The second concern that most buyers will have is rust. One of the best Seller’s Tips that the Alex Manos team can provide is to allow your serious buyers to perform an inspection. It is likely that they will want to put the car up on a lift to inspect; this is normal and should be allowed. Lastly, buyers love documentation. If you have records of maintenance or restoration, or even owner history, this can add value to your sale. The Alex Manos team, a California classic car dealership based in Los Angeles, would be delighted to speak with you regarding your classic. They are always on the lookout for classics of all makes, models and conditions, and are happy to offer top dollar for most cars.
