Buying or Selling a 1967 De Tomaso Mangusta?
Built from 1967 to 1971, the Mangusta was the second production road car made by the recently established Italian manufacturer De Tomaso. The Mangusta was built on its predecessor’s chassis, the De Tomaso Vallelunga. The name Mangusta was chosen because De Tomaso and Carroll Shelby planned to replace the Shelby Cobra with a racing car made by De Tomaso—although the plan didn’t go through—and mangusta is the Italian word for mongoose, which is the main predator of the cobra snake. Originally powered by a mid-mounted Ford 289 V8 engine with an output of 306 hp, the US model was fitted with a Ford 302 V8 engine producing 221 hp. Giorgetto Giugiaro designed the De Tomaso Mangusta and the model’s main design cue is its gullwing doors over the engine. Roughly 400 examples of were built before the De Tomaso Pantera replaced the Mangusta in 1971.
