Selling a 1962 Intermeccanica Apollo GT

1962 Intermeccanica Apollo GT

Upon being founded in 1959 Turin, Italy, Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica would have a unique story ahead of it. What Frank Reisner established as a provider of tuning kits had morphed into an international collaboration that was now turning out distinctive sports cars primarily for the American marketplace. The 1962 Intermeccanica Apollo GT was the second iteration of the European-U.S. concept which Reisner and his business partner Milt Brown hoped would sizably impact the American automotive marketplace. And while the 1962 Intermeccanica Apollo GT certainly stood out on account of its distinctive appearance and sports car qualities, it ended up occupying more of a niche role in the industry than a mainstream place. The car might well have enjoyed a more prolific run had its manufacturers gone about the production process more efficiently.

On the positive side of the ledger, the 1962 Intermeccanica Apollo GT featured a brilliant look, which drew heavily on the Italian sports car aesthetics of the day. It was dynamic, graceful, and refined in its contouring, with an exaggeratedly long hood and a narrow front grill. It seemed forceful and restrained at once, with enough class to belong in a gentleman’s garage and enough strength to have heads turning with every press of the gas. In its 3.5-liter (215 cubic inch) V-8 version, the Apollo was running around with 145 horsepower under the hood; that was itself a hardy figure, and one that lent the car considerable credence by sports standards. But 300 cubic inch V-8, which was a 4.9-liter engine, increased that horsepower figure to over 200, or around 33%. If ever the Apollo had its detractors in terms of power, they were put to the rest with that variant.
