Selling a 1963 Intermeccanica Apollo GT
Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica was four years into its existence when the 1963 Intermeccanica Apollo GT, third iteration of the model, began production. While Frank Reisner had conceived of Construzione as a tuning kit provider, his skill and expertise were quickly employed in a joint venture with American Milt Brown, an engineer with aspirations of bringing the GT aesthetic to his native shores. Reisner was on board and a partnership was born. That the 1963 Intermeccanica Apollo GT was released at all is noteworthy, if only because sales and production numbers had been fairly low for the specialty sports car. Aside from being a bit pricey, the 1963 Intermeccanica Apollo GT was expensive to produce as a result of its being partially constructed in Italy and partially in California. The inefficiency was inevitably reflected in the price tag.
More than anything else, the Intermeccanica Apollo GT was an effective and attractive combination of characteristics and performance features that at once identified it with its direct influences and distinguished itself from them. The car was of Italian design and broadcast as much with every artful angle of its inspired exterior. It was lengthy to an almost exaggerated extent, and needed the space for what was, after all, a sizable Buick V-8 under the hood. Speaking of which, the V-8 in question came in one of two sizes and power-levels—either the 215 cubic inch, 3.5-liter version, or its larger 300 cubic inch, 4.9-liter counterpart. The difference was one of considerable horsepower, though both were suitably strong to meet the sports car criterion. While the Apollo GT was never a big seller, it did make a name for itself and for its manufacturer within the sports car community.
