Selling a 1964 Intermeccanica Apollo GT
It had all started as a tuning kit operation in 1959 Turin, Italy. But Frank Reisner’s company had taken a wildly different direction within a year of its founding. Four years into the next decade, Reisner released the 1964 Intermeccanica Apollo GT, the second to last of its model, and seemed ready to learn from the lessons that series had taught him. When Reisner directed the resources of his Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica into a partnership with an American engineer by the name of Milt Brown, the undertaking had been as simple as it was ambitious—enter the GT marketplace with a worthy sports car of their own. What the 1964 Intermeccanica Apollo GT represented was a continuation of that vision, even if the execution had yielded low production numbers. From a design and engineering perspective, the collaboration had actually been successful, and the 1964 Intermeccanica Apollo GT was evidence of as much.
At heart, the Apollo GT was an ode to the style and class of Italian sports car design. The body, which was manufactured (independently of the powertrain) in Italy, was elegant and bold in equal measures. It was angled in such a way as to beautify the lengthy machine, while the car’s narrow front grill and high-set headlights gave its face a sort of feline quality. Housed within was a Buick V-8 (added in California), which was either 215 cubic inches in size or 300, based on the model. In the case of the 215 version, its 3.5-liter engine produced 145 horses, while the 4.9-liter 300 version could yield over 200. In either case, the Apollo GT was a dignified machine housing remarkable power for its size. In accordance with Reisner and Brown’s shared ambition, the Apollo was a genuine sports contender, despite the labyrinthine production limiting its sales numbers.
