Selling a 1965 Intermeccanica Apollo GT
The partnership had been born in 1960 at the Monaco Grand Prix, wherein Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica founder Frank Reisner and engineer Milt Brown, who was based in California, agreed to collaborate in bringing European-style GTs to the American marketplace. The ensuing five years would see this international team produce nearly one hundred Apollo GTs while generating sufficient interest in and fascination with the brand to keep the business alive. And while the 1965 Intermeccanica Apollo GT would be the model’s final iteration, it was not exiting the stage ignominiously. After all, the specialty sports car had turned many a head within the automotive industry and had netted a few high profile buyers before landing a bit role in a car-themed Disney film (The Love Bug). In short, the 1965 Intermeccanica Apollo GT did not provide the industry with any lessons in mass-production, but it did represent a relevant European foothold in the American sports car market.
A remarkable hybrid of Western European (Italian, specifically) aesthetics and Yankee powertrain engineering. At first glance, the 1965 Intermeccanica Apollo GT is every bit the Old World sports ride its designer, Franco Scaglione, meant to emulate. With its graceful and agile features, its understated elegance, and its deliberately lengthy chassis, the Apollo GT flirted with the gauche, though kept from fully inhabiting it. It was intended to convey both class and power, and it largely succeeded, particularly considering the larger of its two engine variants. Whereas the 3.5-liter V-8 (Buick’s contribution to the project), produced 145 horsepower, the larger 4.9-liter yielded over 200. Whichever model one owned, the strength/weight ratio was ideal for sports car purposes. That 1965 saw the final Apollo roll off the assembly line had much to do with its complex and pricey production; little to do with its driving and visual appeal.
