Selling a 1966 Intermeccanica Italia

1966 Intermeccanica Italia

The year of the Apollo GT’s concluding chapter, its successor, the 1966 Intermeccanica Italia, was effectively pioneered by American Jack Griffith and the British John Crosthwaite, once a chassis designer for British Racing Motors. Their resulting Griffith GT was the foundation for what would ultimately become the 1966 Intermeccanica Italia, a steel-bodied sports car which began life as the Griffith, became the Omega for a time, took the name Torino briefly, and finally landed on Italia (after Ford claimed ownership of Torino). This final name would prove fitting, as the 1966 Intermeccanica Italia would be manufactured entirely on Italian soil, as opposed to the Apollo, which had been constructed partially in Italy before having its powertrain added in California. Making its way from Griffith to Italia was a bit of a trek, but eventually there it was—the Italia.

Higher production volume and dramatically improved sales would be a major distinction between the Italia and the Apollo. A far more efficient and consolidated construction process led to more units rolling out of the factory in a year than what Intermeccanica had produced in the previous half-decade. Other changes included the replacement of the Buick powertrain with a Ford V-8, but from a style perspective the Italia was clearly very much aligned with the Intermeccanica aesthetic. Though it was produced in numbers far greater than what Reisner’s operation had been able to achieve in the early/mid-1960s, the Italia nevertheless remains one of the rarer sports car entries of its day. An average year saw 100 units sold on the open market, perhaps 120, but certainly no more. Thus, this unique amalgamation of European style and American power is an attractive sales item to modern collectors and should be positioned accordingly by those hoping to sell.
