Selling a 1967 Intermeccanica Murena
By the late-1960s, Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica was on much firmer commercial footing than it had been earlier that decade. Having moved very quickly from providing Peugeot and Renault tuning kits to the complete designing, manufacturing, and selling of sports cars, founder Frank Reisner had given himself a crash course in the realities of high-end automotive production. His first joint venture, with American Milt Brown, had brought the Apollo GT into existence. But it was the subsequent Italia that established Intermeccanica as a creative force within the industry, and that car’s commercial success allowed for Reisner to venture out still further with his 1967 Intermeccanica Murena sport wagon. Whether or not the marketplace had been crying out for a sport wagon is difficult to know with any certainty, but Reisner very much aimed to find buyers for the interesting machine.
The 1967 Intermeccanica Murena was as much an unusual entry in the Construzione Automobili family as it was very much a part of it. For one thing, the sport wagon was undeniably large, or at least lengthy. It measured around 18 feet in length and weighed nearly two tons. These dimensions prevented the 1967 Intermeccanica Murena from performing with any finesse in terms of its handling, though the frontend aesthetics of the wagon suggested at least a cosmetic commitment to sportiness. And because the Murena was an Intermeccanica, it was of course powered by a Ford engine—a V-8, of course. Whether because of its unusual appearance, its unwieldy size, or the high price tag (Murenas were expensive to produce), the Intermeccanica Sport wagon never became more than a conversation piece; only 11 were ever made. While the Apollo is often referenced as a rare entry in the Intermeccanica catalog, that model was produced in eight times the number of its far rarer Murena cousin.
