Selling a 1968 Intermeccanica Italia
Frank Reisner had seen Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica, which he founded in 1959, through nearly a decade of dedicated leadership when his 1968 Intermeccanica Italia reached the open marketplace. Established as a tuning kit operation, Reisner flirted with the racing scene briefly before entering into an extended collaboration with American Milt Brown, an engineer. This partnership would yield the Apollo GT, a handsome, sleek, and powerful sports car that endured for five years but saw fewer than 100 units produced during its run. When that project came to an end on account of its low sales, Reisner quickly rallied and entered into a collaboration with Jack Griffith. The immediate precursors of the 1968 Intermeccanica Italia, largely in name, had been known as the Griffith GT, then as the Omega, and very briefly as the Torino. When the final name of Italia was decided upon, it proved very apt, as the 1968 Intermeccanica Italia departed from the earlier Intermeccanica business model in one important regard.
More so than any other single factor, the Apollo GT had been hamstrung by an elaborate and inefficient manufacturing process. While its body/chassis were constructed in Italy, where Intermeccanica was based, the Buick powertrain was only installed after the husk had been shipped to California, where Milt Brown operated. This was certainly in keeping with the spirit of Intermeccanica, at least in terms of its multinational business model, but the process was financially untenable. The Italia would earn its name by being constructed/assembled (powertrain and all) solely in Italy. This process improvement allowed Reisner to scale his business in a way that would have been categorically impossible with the Apollo. Even with this increased efficiency, however, the Italia would only just exceed 100 units sold per year throughout its lifespan.
