Selling a 1968 Intermeccanica Murena

1968 Intermeccanica Murena

Frank Reisner’s car manufacturing company, Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica, had entered the commercial fray in bold style with its 1961 Apollo GT. The European-American specialty sports car had acquitted itself nicely within the automotive critical community, but never found a large consumer market. With the sales success of his Italia model, however, Reisner was better positioned to experiment more boldly with new concepts. And the 1968 Intermeccanica Murena was boldness itself, at least in terms of outward appearance. Categorized as a sport wagon (yes, a sport wagon), the 1968 Intermeccanica Murena was a significant departure from the Apollo and Italia that preceded it, even if a few signature stylistic elements made themselves known.

There may well have been a market on either side of the Atlantic for a sport wagon such as the 1968 Intermeccanica Murena, but it remained concealed from Frank Reisner for at least one major reason: price. The Murena was expensive to manufacture and its sheer cost reflected as much. As a result, only 11 of the model were produced during its run, though it did standout as a novelty attraction when first debuted. This may have been attributable to its noteworthy dimensions and interesting shape. After all, the Murena measured around 18’ feet from bumper to bumper and was relatively heavy at nearly two tons in weight. Horsepower was not a concern, as the land vessel was animated by a 429 cubic inch Ford Hi Performance V-8 engine. That was enough to see the Murena reach speeds of over 100 miles per hour. With less than ideal handling, however, that speed was best reached in a strictly straight line.
