Selling a 1969 Intermeccanica Italia

1969 Intermeccanica Italia

Few sports car makes/models have left as interesting a mark on automobile history as did the 1969 Intermeccanica Italia, a Euro-American project which was several years into its production run and would see its manufacturer into the decade ahead. A great deal is discernible about the 1969 Intermeccanica Italia from its name alone, given the car’s multinational origin and target marketplace, as well as its heavily Italian aesthetic. In many ways, the Italia was a clear descendant of the Apollo GT that had preceded it, with the angular cut of its refined shape to its compact dimensions and signature lengthy hood. But there were clear differences at work in the 1969 Intermeccanica Italia, one of which had to do with its production format, the other of which existed under the hood.

Frank Reisner’s partnership with Jack Griffith was born just as Intermeccanica’s Apollo was making its exit from the automobile marketplace. Griffith had worked with John Crosthwaite, former BRM chassis designer, in the design of a sports ride that would become the Griffith GT. This was essentially the foundation for what would, under Reisner’s shepherding, become the steel-bodied Italia. Powered by a Ford V-8, rather than the Apollo’s Buick motor, the Italia would also see the entirety of its manufacturing process unfold on Italian soil. Reisner had overseen five years of a two-part production scheme that had the Apollo’s chassis built in Italy and its powertrain installed in California. Consolidating production allowed for far more units to be sent to market, resulting in far greater sales for the Italia than had been achieved with the Apollo. In all, Intermeccanica managed to sell between 100-120 Italia units each year of its run. These numbers went a long way towards putting the multinational operation on the map.
