Selling a 1969 Intermeccanica Murena
What goes without saying in looking at Frank Reisner’s work in the automotive industry is that the man largely marched to the beat of his own drum. Reisner’s company, Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica, had been founded as a provider of Peugeot and Renault tuning kits, but was quickly allied with the business ambitions of American Milt Brown, an engineer with his eye on the GT market. Their collaboration had given rise to the Apollo GT, a sports car that turned a few heads in niche motor-head circles, but would not make a big impact amongst consumers. Fast-forward a couple of years and Reisner had found his range with the Italia. Sales of the Italia were strong and Reisner was looking to make another splash…with a sport wagon. The 1969 Intermeccanica Murena was, indeed, a sport wagon and very much worthy of the title.
In honoring the Construzione Automobili way of business, the 1969 Intermeccanica Murena was a blend of Italian aesthetics and American engineering. It was also enormous, with an 18’ bumper-to-bumper length and over 30 square feet of rear seats down cargo space. Enhancing the look of so colossal a vehicle with sports car qualities was no easy feat, but the 1969 Intermeccanica Murena more or less achieved the balance. Its front end, which was itself the size of a hot tub, had a sloped, sleek angling which kept the sport wagon from too closely resembling a hearse. It was also a strong ride, with its Hi Performance Ford V-8 (429 cubic inches) allowing the highway titan to reach speeds of over 100 miles per hour. Regardless of Reisner’s hopes for the Murena, his sport wagon experiment never amounted to much more than an enjoyable spectacle. Only 11 were manufactured before the model was indefinitely mothballed.
