Selling a 1970 Intermeccanica Italia
There may well be a classic sports car with a more unusual origin tale than that of the 1970 Intermeccanica Italia, but it would be hard to track down. Frank Reisner founded Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica in 1959 with the aim of providing tuning kits for select car makes. Soon after, Reisner made the acquaintance of American Milt Brown, an engineer, and a joint undertaking was born. The Apollo GT followed soon thereafter and launched Intermeccanica into the sports car community virtually overnight. Sales would not follow in any large numbers, however, as the model proved costly to manufacture and struggled to find a market. But Reisner entered the second decade of his company’s existence with the 1970 Intermeccanica Italia selling fairly well, and with many wrinkles of the Apollo production having been effectively ironed out.
The 1970 Intermeccanica Italia was a truly multinational machine, even by the standards already established by Reisner and Brown. In its earliest form, as the Griffith GT, the Italia’s base structure was credited to former British Racing Motors chassis designer John Crosthwaite, though the car featured an American motor, as had the Apollo. Ultimately, the Italia was an Italian-manufactured sports car of British design powered by a Ford V-8 and intended for sale in the United States. By any standard, its nomenclature was perfectly apt. And because of the improved manufacturing process, unit production was able to meet a growing consumer demand. While fewer than 100 Apollo units had been sold during the entirety of that model’s run, the Italia’s sales were exceeding that number by 10-30 every year. Precise figures are unclear, but somewhere between 500-600 Italia units were sold during its lifespan, which still qualifies the model as being fairly rare, though less so than others of its make.
