Selling a 1970 Intermeccanica Murena
When the clock struck midnight on January 1st, 1970, Frank Reisner had good reason to believe his company, Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica, would continue its upward trajectory throughout the coming decade. Ten years earlier, the former chemical engineer had merged his business interests with those of Milt Brown, a California-based engineer with hopes of entering the GT sports car market. If either man could have foreseen the 1970 Intermeccanica Murena, their shared vision might have taken shape very differently. After all, the sport wagon was more than a departure from their Apollo GT and the subsequent Italia—it was a hybrid vehicle largely without precedent. Certain aspects of the 1970 Intermeccanica Murena betrayed its Italian design aesthetics, though these could not help but collide with the wagon aspect itself.
Construzione Automobili always occupied a curious patch of real estate within the larger car manufacturing industry. Straddling the Atlantic with one foot on American soil and the other in European territory, Reisner’s operation sought to actively amalgamate elements from both sides in producing its unique sports cars. This was as true of the 1970 Intermeccanica Murena as it was of any of its non-wagon predecessors, as the 18’ Euro-American juggernaut of a car ran on a Ford Hi Performance V-8. The engine was commensurate with the task of hauling that heavy sport wagon around at speeds of 100 miles per hour. Handling was less than desirable, while the price tag was predictably high; the Murena was expensive to produce. As a result, only 11 ever saw the light of day, making the Murena an extremely rare vehicle.
