Selling a 1971 Intermeccanica Indra

1971 Intermeccanica Indra

Premiere racing events and car exhibitions are of central importance to the high end automotive community. It was the 1960 Monaco Grand Prix that had first brought Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica founder Frank Reisner into contact with engineer Milt Brown, an ambitious American with his eye on the growing GT market. Eleven years and two notable sports car designs later, Reisner was introducing curious Geneva Automobile Show attendees to his 1971 Intermeccanica Indra. Reisner had established a definitive look and aesthetic for his company with the earlier Apollo GT, and stubbornly carved out a marketplace niche for himself with the commercially successful Italia. With the 1971 Intermeccanica Indra Reisner was looking to set a new benchmark for sports car design and performance. The ambition may well have been realized, if not for a number of factors beyond the visionary’s control.

What the Apollo and Italia had achieved for their manufacturer was a clear sense of Reisner’s style. With the 1971 Intermeccanica Indra represented was the height of that style, as the car was still more sharp and cutting in its lines than had been its predecessors. Designed by the renowned Franco Scaglione, the Indra possessed all the telltale signs of Italian sports car influence and was advancing the style in its own right. And as the Indra was an Intermeccanica, one of the engine variants was a Chevrolet V-8, just as the Apollo had run on a Buick powertrain and the Italia a Ford. There was also an Opel straight-6 option, which was sensible given the Indra’s sales push in German markets. The Indra stood as an important milestone for Reisner’s niche automobile manufacturing market, which is what renders the rare model a sought after piece of sports car history.
