Selling a 1971 Intermeccanica Murena
The 1960s had been largely kind to Frank Reisner and his Italian-based Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica. While the operation had humbly begun as a tuning-kit provider for Peugeots and Renaults, it had very rapidly evolved into something far greater and far more ambitious. Partnerships with various American engine providers and design influences from Italy and elsewhere throughout Europe had collectively created for Construzione Automobili a distinctive identity within the sports car community. And the limits of that distinctiveness would find themselves tested some years later with the 1971 Intermeccanica Murena, a conspicuous sport wagon which combined sleek design, high horsepower, and capacious cargo space into one remarkable vehicle. With the 1971 Intermeccanica Murena, Reisner was no longer competing solely with his GT rivals; he was expanding the playing field. His efforts were ultimately not met with any great success, though the Murena did garner a good deal of initial attention and hype.
As a definitive sport wagon, the 1971 Intermeccanica Murena fit the bill perfectly. It was exceptionally lengthy at around 18’ bumper-to-bumper and weighed in at nearly two tons. The interior space was itself remarkable, with over 30 square feet of rear seats down cargo capacity. In terms of sportiness, the front end was lean and tapered in a handsomely angular manner, even if this aspect made for an unusual transition to the cabin. And motor strength was certainly of no concern, as the Murena was hauled around by 429 cubic inch Ford Hi Performance V-8 that allowed the sport wagon to reach and exceed speeds of 100 miles per hour. As the cumbersome wagon did not handle particularly well in tight circumstances, it was best enjoyed on the open road. Ultimately, the Murena’s high price and limited market appeal saw to it that a mere 11 were produced throughout the entirety of its lifespan.
