Selling a 1972 Intermeccanica Indra

1972 Intermeccanica Indra

It is difficult to overstate the remarkable nature of Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica founder Frank Reisner’s rise from automotive industry obscurity to one of relative prominence within the span of a single decade. Starting out as a provider of Peugeot and Renault tuning kits in 1959, Reisner quickly almost immediately graduated to full-on sports car conceptualization and manufacturing. The Apollo GT had shown great promise and provided its makers with a serviceable template for future projects. Then came the Italia, which improved both functionally and commercially upon the Apollo. But when the 1972 Intermeccanica Indra made itself known, Reisner was making a bold statement to the larger sports car community. The 1972 Intermeccanica Indra, second iteration of its model, sought to place its manufacturer in the big leagues, certainly from a stylistic standpoint.

Central to the Intermeccanica business model was the idea of international collaboration. In this regard, the 1972 Intermeccanica Indra did not deviate in the slightest. Its distinctive aerodynamic exterior was designed by the well-known Franco Scaglione, and the Italian aesthetic was evident no matter where on the car’s body your eye chose to fall. This did not depart from the Apollo or Italia precedents, but rather doubled down on them. Also, the Indra was powered by either an American V-8 (provided by Chevrolet) or by an Opel straight-6, based upon which variant was selected. While previous Intermeccanicas had used strictly American powertrains, the Indra was sold heavily in Germany, which goes some way in explaining the Opel option. Despite the Indra’s remarkable appearance and excellent performance, it was fated to be produced in very small numbers before business turmoil shepherded the concept to an early grave. Collectors and car enthusiasts are cognizant of the Indra and its place in automobile lore. Its rarity is certainly a notable selling point.
