Selling a 1972 Intermeccanica Italia
Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica had traveled far since Frank Reisner founded the company in 1959, and the 1972 Intermeccanica Italia was a shining testament to that fact. Though this was the model’s final production year, it was closing out a strong chapter in its manufacturer’s story. The company had been founded as a tuning kit provider before venturing onto the racing scene. Reisner’s partnership with Milt Brown would lead to the Apollo GT, a small-scale sports car project on which Intermeccanica established its distinctive look, and with whose management Reisner learned a great deal about vehicle manufacturing for a larger market. As the 1972 Intermeccanica Italia made itself known to the consumer marketplace, it did so with unit numbers in the 100-120 range, which represented enormous growth in relation to its predecessor model.
The 1972 Intermeccanica Italia had all the hallmarks of a Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica set of wheels. It was long in the hood to the point of being consciously ostentatious, it was expertly designed, it was as much a vehicular work of art as it was a powerful sports car, and it looked like the very definition of class. Though the Italia was clearly a product of Italian cosmetic influence, its chassis was attributable to the creative energies of British Racing Motors designer John Crosthwaite. That an Italian-manufactured sports car should have a touch of British influence and be powered by an American (Ford V-8) motor was by no means unusual in the Intermeccanica world. And while the manufacturing process allowed for sales numbers to regularly exceed 100 per year, the Italia is nevertheless a classic sports car rarity by any standard. This is generally promising news for hopeful sellers, though the actual business of car sales requires a good deal of effort.
