Selling a 1972 Intermeccanica Murena
How could Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica founder Frank Reisner had fathomed where his business ventures would take him a bit more than a decade in? Reisner had started out rather modestly, providing tuning kits for Peugeots and Renaults, before stepping foot into the highly competitive sports car space with American business partner Milt Brown. Though their shared project, the Apollo GT, would not perform well commercially, it provided a template for future undertakings that Reisner would largely utilize for years thereafter. The business model had Reisner producing sports cars of decidedly European (Italian, mostly) aesthetics that would in turn be powered by American engines. Buick, Ford, and Chevrolet, for instance, all had their turn at bat in providing Reisner’s cars with muscular powertrains. In the case of the 1972 Intermeccanica Murena, that honor belonged to Ford. Categorized as a sport wagon and matching that description by every conceivable measure, the 1972 Intermeccanica Murena was emblematic of its manufacturer’s capacity for innovation and penchant for risk-taking.
Measuring at over 200 inches in length and weighing nearly two tons, the sportiness aspect of the 1972 Intermeccanica Murena might rightly have been called into question if not for the characteristically angular and aerodynamic front end that betrayed its Italian origin. But it was also a wagon and had plenty of space to show for it. Its rear seats down cargo capacity was north of 30 square feet, making it comparable to many walk-in closets. Even rear seats up the capacity was nearly 14 square feet, which is substantial even by modern SUV standards. And hauling around whatever found itself occupying that ample room was no concern either, as beneath the Murena’s lengthy hood sat a Ford Hi Performance V-8 (429), which allowed the long wagon to comfortably achieve speeds of 100 miles per hour. Ultimately, however, a high price tag and limited consumer demand would sink the Murena undertaking. Only 11 units were manufactured in all, rendering the model extremely rare in relation to contemporary sports cars.
