Selling a 1974 Intermeccanica Indra

1974 Intermeccanica Indra

A reliably compelling entity within the sports car industry, Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica was fifteen years removed from its 1959 founding by Frank Reisner when the 1974 Intermeccanica Indra, last of the model, was released for consumer sale. A swell of hype had surrounded the design following its Geneva Automobile Show debut, but the 1974 Intermeccanica Indra was on the market during a period of misfortune for its manufacturer. The failure of an integral partnership with Chevrolet crippled the model’s production in its prime and doomed it to a premature demise. Nevertheless, the 1974 Intermeccanica Indra would influence related designs for years to come and was widely regarded as a brilliant sports car in its own right.

As was standard manufacturing practice for Intermeccanica, the Indra featured Italian aesthetics and style but was powered by an American engine, at least in most cases. Many Indras, whether coupe or convertible, actually featured an Opel straight-6 motor, rather than the standard Chevrolet V-8. The earlier Apollo and Italia had used exclusively American powertrains, but the Indra was intended for heavy sale in German markets, thus the Opel variant. What was consistent from one to the next was the signature artistic touch of designer Franco Scaglione, the man who had lent his vision to the Indra project and rendered it the stylish masterpiece it was. Frank Reisner had enormous ambitions for the Indra, and under less strained circumstances they might have been realized. As it was fewer than 130 of the Indra model were manufactured during the 1971-74 timeframe and most of those were sold in Europe. The Indra is in the Apollo GT category of rare classics, certainly in the American market.
