A curious and cumbersome manufacturing process doomed the Apollo GT to low sales from the start, as each steel frame was manufactured in Italy before being shipped to California for the addition of its Buick powertrain. Consumer pricing reflected this cost-intensive process and relegated the Apollo to the role of novelty sports car. A thin ray of light for the car was its finding a few famous buyers later in its run. Not to mention, the Apollo GT was featured in the Disney film The Love Bug, a role that raised Intermeccanica’s profile in the public eye. Reisner would take a few lessons with him from the Apollo GT experience, but this initial foray into the American marketplace was at least enough to generate interest in Intermeccanica.
