Selling a Intermeccanica Indra
Since founding Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica in 1959, Frank Reisner had, by the early 1970s, made a notable impact upon the sports car scene. The first half of the previous decade had seen his Apollo GT turn heads within elite automotive circles, even if the car struggled commercially before its mid-60s retirement. But the lessons learned with his freshman effort were intelligently applied with his follow-up: the far more commercially successful Italia. A few years into the Italia’s strong production run, it was clear that Reisner was playing the competitive game effectively, and on his own terms for the most part. Enter the Intermeccanica Indra, a marvelously designed sports ride that Reisner introduced at the Geneva Automobile Show. Available as either a coupe or a convertible, the Intermeccanica Indra marked yet another step forward for Construzione in terms of both form and function.
Though instantly recognizable as belonging to the Intermeccanica family of sports cars, there were minor cosmetic differences that rendered the Intermeccanica Indra distinctive from its predecessors. These stylistic variances were doubtless a result of their designer’s signature touch, as the Indra was indeed designed by the great Franco Scaglione. It was in keeping with the Intermeccanica way of business that the Indra should possess an obvious Italian aesthetic while housing an American engine, provided by Chevrolet in this case. By this point, Intermeccanica had already sold models with Buick and Ford powertrains; it may well have been Chevy’s turn. Some models also used an Open straight-6, which was sensible as the Indra was marketed and sold heavily in the German market. Unfortunately for the Yanks, few Indras reached American shores before the model ran into production problems and was discontinued by Intermeccanica.
