Selling a Intermeccanica Italia

Intermeccanica Italia

A chemical engineer before founding the Turin, Italy-based Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica in 1959, Frank Reisner had a remarkably creative and industrious decade ahead of him. Beginning in 1960, Reisner and his American partner Milt Brown devoted their professional energies to the introduction of European-style GT sports cars to the American automotive market. Their collective vision resulted in the Apollo GT, which was certainly distinctive and did capture a sliver of the sports car consumer pie. But this freshman effort ultimately fell victim to high production costs, with only 90 Apollos being manufactured during the model’s run. Once that chapter closed in 1965, Reisner regrouped and embarked upon a collaboration which would yield the Intermeccanica Italia, a sports car which would prove scalable and enjoy more sales success than its predecessor.

What would ultimately become the Intermeccanica Italia began its journey elsewhere in the automotive realm. A collaboration between Jack Griffith and John Crosthwaite, a former BRM chassis designer, led to what began life as the Griffith GT. This iteration quickly gave way to a successor known as the Omega (shepherded by Steve Wilder), before a brief a tenure as the Torino, and then finally the Intermeccanica Italia. A steel body housing a Plymouth engine, the Italia was in many respects a continuation of what the Apollo had ushered in, though the Italia would be manufactured entirely in Italy. This change in the production format would ultimately lead to greater unit sales than what the Apollo had achieved, with total Italia units amounting to a 500% increase over its precursor. While not as rare as earlier or a few subsequent Intermeccanica models, the Italia nevertheless remains in demand with buyers who recognize its unique place in automotive history.
