Selling a Intermeccanica Murena

Intermeccanica Murena

Whatever Frank Reisner’s original ambitions for Construzione Automobili Intermeccanica, which he had founded in 1959 to sell Peugeot and Renault tuning kits, they were probably not taking shape exactly as he had envisioned. Within of setting up shop, Reisner was partnering with an American engineer named Milt Brown on the production of their Apollo GT sports car. And while the Apollo did enjoy a few sales here and there, it was not until the Italia came along that Intermeccanica began to enjoy true commercial prosperity. Hoping to seize the momentum, Reisner moved quickly in developing what would become the Intermeccanica Murena, a sport wagon that was intended to expand its manufacturer’s marketplace reach. The aim seemed also to be one of transferring as much sportiness as possible to the Intermeccanica Murena’s wagon frame. Needless to say, the Murena caught the attention of automobile experts and reviewers, if only for its being a bit ahead of its time.

If anything about the Intermeccanica Murena should be immediately pointed out, it is the sport wagon’s sheer size. At over 200” bumper to bumper, the Murena was long even by the wagon standards. Nevertheless, the Murena belonged to the Intermeccanica family of cars and was possessed of certain stylistic properties because of it. The front end featured a sloping, edged appearance that suggested an element of sportiness to earn that sport wagon descriptor. The windows, which were electric, had a sleek, narrow cut to them, lending the wagon a cunning quality not unlike that of standard sports cars. And relative to the Murena’s size, the Ford V-8 that powered it was suitably large and powerful, allowing the wagon to reach and exceed speeds of 100 miles per hour. Handling was a bit less than hoped for, so those 100 miles per hour were best enjoyed in a very straight line.
