Introduced in 1966 the Lamborghini 400 GT is a 2+2 seater sports car produced until 1968 when the Islero model came out as a replacement. The 1967 Lamborghini 400 GT succeeded to the 350 GT model and was heavily based on its predecessor for the design. However, none of the panels of the 350 GT were used for the 400 GT and the bodywork had to be thoroughly revised to accommodate two extra seats. A 4-liter V12 with six Weber carburetors powered the 400 GT and the car could produce up to 320 hp. The engine was linked to a new five-speed gearbox developed by Lamborghini that was smoother and quieter than the previously used ZF unit. In order to adapt to the 400 extra pounds of the 400 GT model—compared to the 350 GT, the four-wheel independent suspension had to be revised. Overall, handling and performance were greatly improved for the model.
