The Merak shared most of its sheet metal with the Maserati Bora, which was the V8 Giugiaro-designed GT introduced the year before. The smaller V6 also gave room for a small pair of rear seats, making the Merak a more convenient sports car than the Bora. Through the end of 1975, many changes were made to the model following the switch of ownership from Citroen to De Tomaso.
