Buying or Selling a 1983 Maserati Merak?
The Maserati Merak was introduced in 1972 and followed the Maserati Bora launched the previous year. The Bora was fitted with a V8 engine, while the Merak was powered by a smaller and lighter V6 unit that gave space for an extra row of seats in the back. The Merak was offered until 1983, while the Bora’s production run ended in 1980. Early models were fitted with Citroen parts—especially hydraulic systems, replaced by more conventional systems when De Tomaso took over Maserati. Wider wheels and tires and a chin spoiler that increased high-speed stability gave later models a better handling. Power was boosted from 190 to 220 hp on the engine of the 1983 Maserati Merak thanks to special tuning from the engineers. From 1976, a variant called SS was offered—and only produced in 1,000 units, with a more potent engine and a recognizable black front grille.
