The third generation of the Mercedes Type 300, the 300C was introduced with the 1956 Mercedes Benz 300C. Visually, the 1956 300C was almost identically to its 300B predecessor, however it did offer an expanded rear window and the first ever option for an automatic transmission. Available as either a sedan or a four-door cabriolet, production was actually stopped in June 1956 when Daimler-Benz said it would be cancelling the Type 300 line. Due to an outcry from the public and high demand from dealers, the line was reinstated. Many will tell you however, that the after nearly a decade of production, the last of the Type 300s were a mere indulgence for Daimler-Benz, as it was rumored that they were losing money with each 300 produced.
