The Mercedes Benz W108 series replaced the popular fintail W111 sedans in 1965. Presenting buyers with modern styling, curved side glass, and no signs of the previous fintail design, the 1966 Mercedes Benz 250SE also offered several mechanical upgrades. In fact, 1966 marked Mercedes’ move to the new M129 engine. Acquiring a reputation for high oil consumption and valve train noise, the use of the M129 engine was short-lived. In 1967 the M129 engine, which offered 2,496cc was replaced by the M130, which boasted 2,778cc and corrected some of the complaints associated with the previous model. Despite the change, the engine in both the 1966 Mercedes 250SE and its later year models is often cited for being over-matched by the weight of the car.
