The 1963 BMW 3200 CS was the second model produced of incredibly luxurious 3200 CS line of BMW coupes with a V8 engine. In spite of how luxurious it was, it was somewhat outdated. As the last BMW to feature a solid rear axle, a perimeter frame, and pushrod-operated engine valves, the 3200 CS was rather antiquated from an engineering standpoint, with its designers having taken cues from earlier luxury coupes produced by BMW, such as the 503 and 507. Despite its old-fashioned style, it was also the beginning of a legacy. The now-iconic and easily recognizable Hofmeister Kink made its first appearance on the 3200 CS. This well-known design is a distinctive bend between the rear side windows and the rear view window, often showcasing the BMW insignia. Beyond the kink, the 3200’s low beltline and tall greenhouse with thin pillars would become an inspiration for many of BMW’s later coupes.
