Selling a 1972 BMW E9

1972 BMW E9

For at least one good reason, 1972 was significant for Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW), which ushered in the tenth production year of New Class sedans. The sedan as conceptualized, engineered, and manufactured by BMW decisively lifted the Bavarian automobile company into a state of sustained financial prosperity and had reshaped the automotive landscape in significant ways. And though sedans were continuing to do well for BMW ten years into its revived state, the practical and conservative design was sharing its stage with the sportier coupé in various forms and engine sizes. The 1972 BMW E9 was the most highly produced vehicle of its type, with 6,777 units produced across eight variants, and paced well sales wise alongside its New Class cousins. Unlike the previous year, and of significance from a sales literature perspective, there were no 2.8-liter variants produced in 1972. Instead, every 1972 BMW E9 was of the larger and more powerful 3.0-liter design, which pleased (and continues to please) many racing-minded car enthusiasts.

By the early-1970s, Baron Falkenhausen’s M10 motor had been effectively overshadowed by the M30 which gave roaring life to the 1972 BMW E9. With its 2,986 cc displacement motor generating 180 horsepower, the BMW E9 was essentially a rocket on wheels capable of generating both high top speeds and enough torque to tear chunks from the driveway. As heavily as BMW had invested in the sedan market, the E9 was an ongoing love letter to the more adventurous drivers who had been won over to the Bavarian manufacturer’s mission statement. Those possessing a 1972 BMW E9 are housing both the most numerously manufactured E9 coupé, and also the first variant to be produced solely with the 3.0-liter M30. Excellent selling points and important knowledge to be shared with interested buyers.
