In 1965, the German sports car community was on the cusp of heyday its participants had worked hard to achieve. Though not a high-volume player in the space, Glas was making ripples with the release of its fiery Glas 1700 GT, a markedly more powerful iteration of the 1300 GT which had immediately preceded it. A direct descendant from a design and aesthetics standpoint, the Glas 1700 GT was nevertheless a clear increase in engine output. Nearly as important to the Glas image as was its straight-line speed and acceleration properties was the crisp packaging and tight handling which rendered the engine power rather manageable.

Not to be casually dismissed, the 1300 GT was capable of a firm 109 miles per hour courtesy of a muscular 1290 cc engine. But the Glas 1700 GT was designed specifically to top its predecessor, and top its predecessor it did. With 74 kW of output—translating to 100 horses of power—the 1700 easily overtook the 55 kW of the 1300. It was capable of 115 miles per hour and accelerated fluidly. Furthermore, the larger engine warranted a change in hood design, as the engine’s bulkier construction stood taller in its chamber than did the 1300’s. For that reason, the 1700 GT features a distinctive ridge which accommodates that added heft. Finding a decent market in the American market, the Glas 1700 GT was a worthy entry in the German sports car pantheon. Sellers these days may be inclined to part ways with such a unique slice of automotive history, but the price had best be closely considered.
