Selling a 1969 BMW 1800
As the 1960s were coming to their inevitable end, the leadership at Bavarian Motor Works was looking to strategically bridge the divide with market competitiveness and creative ingenuity front of mind. Regardless of what else came to pass on the production lines, the 1969 BMW 1800 would do its part in keeping drivers and company investors happy. Having long ago eclipsed its forebear (the 1500) on both the sales and performance fronts, the 1800 series was essentially the BMW mascot for several years running. Sufficiently powered to warrant a sporty reputation, but possessing everything one expects of a standard sedan, the 1969 BMW 1800 was well-positioned to gently ease its manufacturing parent into the 1970s. A mere ten years earlier, BMW’s fate was anything but certain. That the days ahead looked bright was due as much to the 1800 as to any two fellow models combined.
And if the promising fate of BMW was largely attributable to the 1800, that model’s own success was primarily owed to that ingenious motor, the M10 SOHC, designed and employed in the early 1960s. The engine remained a fixture of the 1800 throughout its long life and was operating in accordance with all lofty expectations under the hood of the 1969 BMW 1800. A new page was turning in the BMW storybook, but the 1800 would continue to feature for a few paragraphs to come. The 4-speed manual sedan with the distinctive grill and attractive style was darting around highways throughout the 1960s, its 90 horses doing what the drivers expected of them—racing right along. That race is still going a half-century later for those interested in buying a piece of BMW lore. Prospective sellers have a strong platform on which to stand in singing the 1800’s praises and should keep that in mind when speaking with interested buyers.
